Human rights activists allege police harassment

Two human rights activists, Akarathi and R. Mohan, claimed here on Monday that they were being regularly watched, followed and harassed by ‘Q’ Branch police.

They petitioned Collector T. S. Rajasekar about the interference of the police into their personal lives. “Every day, four police personnel stand outside my window, follow me to my place of work and even stand outside the houses of my friends and relatives. It is excruciating to do my work,” said Mr. Akarathi.

Mr. Mohan, a differently abled activist, said that police officials had approached his place of work, threatened his employer, which cost him his job.

R. Murali, general secretary, People’s Union for Civil Liberties , said that unlawful intervention of the police was on the rise in Madurai and it should be curbed. “Allow activists to do their job peacefully, instead of portraying them as extremists,” he said.
