Members of Indian Red Cross Society conducted a road safety and helmet awareness campaign near Theni old bus stand here on Saturday.

Members from the district unit of the society rewarded motorists wearing helmet by giving them a tree sapling. Those who did not wear a helmet were stopped and given advice in the form of an awareness pamphlet.

“We joined hands with police personnel and raised awareness on the importance of wearing helmets. We distributed around 300 saplings and 1,000 pamphlets for nearly two hours,” said K. Surulivel, secretary of Indian Red Cross Society, Theni district.

N.R.P. Thiagarajan, chairman of the society, and police officials from the Traffic Wing took part in the campaign.

In another event, members of Pasumai Pathukappu Makkal Iyakkam, an environmental NGO, planted 300 saplings near Lakshmipuram here. “We hope to plant around one lakh saplings this year across Theni district to raise awareness among people regarding climate change,” said R.K. Selvakumar, founder of the NGO.
