The Madras High Court Judges M.M. Sundresh and N. Sathish Kumar, along with Chief Judicial Magistrate L.S. Sathiyamurthy and a panel of Government Advocates, visited Madurai Central Prison on Thursday.

The judges, during their ‘surprise visit’ to the prison, spent over three hours on the premises and inspected the condition of the prison to ascertain if basic facilities were provided to the inmates. The judges visited all the blocks and heard the grievances of the inmates.

The judges had earlier expressed their willingness to visit the prison while hearing of the habeas corpus petition seeking a direction to set at liberty activist R.S. Mugilan. The petitioner, J. Stefen Selvaraj, a friend of Mugilan, alleged that the activist was kept in solitary confinement under unhygienic conditions. The surprise visit was made in a bid to ascertain the living conditions of the inmates of the prison, sources said.
