HC directs Collector to file report on Tasmac shops

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Friday directed the Collector of Pudukottai to file a report on the number of Tasmac shops in the district.

A Division Bench of Justices K.K. Sasidharan and P.D. Audikesavalu directed theCollector to look into the total number of Tasmac shops, nature of the outlets and their licence period to ascertain if any such shops were operating without valid licence. The court adjourned the case till November 24.

The court was hearing the case of petitioner Annadurai of Pudukottai, who sought a direction to close Tasmac shops attached with bars that had failed to renew their licence in Pudukottai district. He had complained that in Pudukottai alone the State exchequer was losing out in crores of rupees due to the operation of such shops. Earlier, the court had suo motu impleaded the Home, Prohibition and Excise departments in the case.
