HC closes habeas corpus plea in jewellery heist case

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Wednesday disposed of a habeas corpus petition after a suspect in the Tiruchi Lalithaa Jewellery theft case, picked up for inquiry, was produced before the court. The petition was filed by his wife.

A Division Bench of Justices S. Vaidyanathan and N. Anand Venkatesh closed the petition after the court was informed that V. Prasath from Madurai, a goldsmith, was only picked up for inquiry and not detained. He was subsequently let off.

The petitioner, Packiyalakshmi, said that three persons claiming to be Tiruchi police had picked up her husband for inquiry. Later, when she enquired about her husband, she was informed that the police were not aware of his whereabouts.

She filed the petition before the High Court as S.S. Colony police here did not register her complaint.
