MADURAI

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday allowed the petition filed by a woman, who has voluntarily converted to Islam. The woman sought police protection from her parents who had allegedly detained her for going against their wishes.

Justice G. K. Ilanthiraiyan allowed the petition filed by the resident of Madurai, a graduate in English Literature. She said that she was fascinated by the teachings of Islam during her graduation and she converted to the religion in 2018. But her parents opposed the move and detained her at home.

In her petition, the woman said that fearing for life she managed to leave her residence on September 12 and approached a jamaath for help. However, knowing her whereabouts, her parents tried to secure her, she said. Refusing to go with her parents, she sought police protection.
