Corruption here in India has become institutionalised, criminal justice system is slow, and they say ‘justice delayed is justice denied' but still, justice in most cases are delayed, said K. R. Shyam Sundar, Director General of Police and CMD, Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation, Chennai.
Addressing the inaugural function of four-day national workshop on ‘Leadership in Peace Building' organised by Department of Youth Welfare Studies at Madurai Kamaraj University, he stressed that to have peace in ourselves is an essential component to propagate world peace.
Mr. Shyam Sundar said that love, truth and simplicity are the essential qualities that a human being should possess to build peace. Problems remain when good people are silent and refuse to voice against oppression.
“Now we live in a state where you find education without character, politics without principle and business without morality, have become common. Education has become a money spinning business and quality of education is deteriorated here in Tamil Nadu.”
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the workshop, the DGP said that in a single phase recently, 3,000 quarters, 45 police stations and 11 other buildings were constructed. Since its inception in 1981 Police Housing Corporation has not completed this many buildings in a single phase. Now the government has decided that Fire and Rescue Services Department and Prison Department buildings would be constructed by TNPHC.
Answering to a question whether all the police personnel have been brought under the housing scheme, he said 42 per cent have been covered and though the aim is to cover 100 per cent, it will be achieved soon in a phased manner.
P. P. Chellathurai, professor and head, Department of Youth Welfare Studies, in his welcome address said that the workshop's objective is to talk, discuss and disseminate information on peace building to present and future generations. Peace building in the contemporary times of extremism and genocide has become a much needed effort.
Isaac Mohanlal, Advocate, Madras High Court, in his speech said that peace is possible in two extreme conditions, first in a situation where people are in chains as ideological slaves and second through the democratic process where a rule based on liberty, equality and justice prevails. “Leaders play a vital role in building a peaceful society but unfortunately we do not have such selfless leaders now. Freedom is never a final accomplishment and only eternal vigilance could guarantee freedom.”
K.P.T.Ganesan, Member, Syndicate Committee, Madurai Kamaraj University, presided over the event. M.Rajiakodi, Registrar (in charge), MKU offered his felicitations. Pari Parameswaran, Assistant Professor, Department of Youth Welfare Studies, MKU organised the event. 25 resource persons would be presenting 31 papers during the four-day workshop where 75 students from across India are part of.
