MADURAI

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Wednesday directed the Tiruchi Collector to hand over the vacant land allotted for construction of Government Law College men’s hostel to the Principal of the college by December 10.

A Division Bench of Justices K.K. Sasidharan and P.D. Audikesavalu also ordered filing of a report on compliance of the direction on December 11. The court also dispensed with the appearance of the Principal Secretary, Revenue and Disaster Management department, after the land was allotted for construction of the hostel.

Revenue department allotted the vacant land, measuring 7,700 square metres, near Abishekapuram, Tiruchi, for construction of the hostel. The petitioner, V. Purushotaman of Tiruchi, a third-year student of the law college, had complained that though the college started functioning from the current campus in 1994, there was no hostel allotted for men.

He said close to 700 men students – several of them from other districts and with a rural background – were studying at the college. Now, they had to find cheap accommodation in far-off places, considering their poor economic background, he said.

Though land was allotted for construction of the hostel, no steps were initiated for construction of the building, he said, and sought a direction to the authorities concerned to expedite the process.
