Alleging that the Tamil Nadu government has totally failed in addressing the growing unemployment problem, the State unit of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the youth wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), has condemned the government for ‘destroying’ job opportunities in every sector.

Ending its three day 16th State conference here on Sunday, DYFI at the end of delegates session, adopted resolutions stating that the recent activities of the State government showed that it not only failed to provide jobs to the educated unemployed youth but destroyed job opportunities in various sectors.

Alleging irregularities in the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC), it alleged corruption right from the appointment of government servants to professors in educational institutions.

“Due to the government’s ill-conceived policies, job opportunities in private sector have come to a standstill,” a resolution said.

Stating that five lakh people had been rendered jobless after 50,000 small industries were shut in the State, the conference in another resolution said after some of the big industries such as Foxconn and Nokia were shut down, medium and small industries were also in distress.

The impending entry of Walmart would hit the retail sector and add fuel to the unemployment problem, it noted. There had been no jobs in pubic sector undertakings or they refused to recruit people, it said.

A good number of youth were employed in service industries but they had no job security, it said. The job conditions of scores of men and women who were employed in the service sector, hospitals, hotels and shopping malls were pathetic but the government remained passive, it charged.

In other resolutions, the DYFI urged the government to withdraw the government order 55 and fill vacancies in government departments, demanded scrapping of NEET for medical education, separate law to deal with ‘honour killings’, elections to the local bodies and steps to protect the livelihood of those employed in cracker units.

The conference elected N. Rejish kumar as DYFI State president, while re-electing S. Bala and Deepa as secretary and treasurer, respectively. The conference was attended among others by CPI (M) Politburo member Brinda Karat, party MP T.K. Rangarajan, DYFI all India president P.A. Mohammed Riyaz, general secretary Abay Mukherjee and Kerala unit secretary A.A. Raheem.
