‘Good Friday’ prayers conducted

Easter celebrations will begin around 11.30 p.m. with renewal of baptismal promises

Commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, ‘Good Friday’ prayers were conducted in all churches in the district on the holiest day of Christianity.

After the ‘Washing of the Feet’ rites, the highlight of ‘Maundy Thursday’ celebrations, conducted in all churches on Thursday night, adoration continued till midnight and the silent prayers started at 6 a.m. on Friday.

Following the ‘Way of the Cross’ conducted in churches, ‘Good Friday’ special service commenced in the afternoon to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Secretary of St. Xavier’s College, Palayamkottai Rev. Fr. Antonysamy SJ led the ‘Good Friday’ prayers at St. Xavier’s Cathedral.

In the day-long special prayers organised at Holy Trinity Cathedral, a few thousand CSI Christians participated.

Similar prayers were organised in all CSI Churches across the district.

In the ‘Way of the Cross’ conducted at Our Lady of Snows Basilica in Thoothukudi, Rector of the Church Rev. Fr. Lerin De Rose led the prayers, in which thousands participated despite the menacingly rising temperature.

Bishop of Thoothukudi RC Diocese Most Rev. Yvon Ambroise participated in the ‘Way of the Cross’ conducted at Sacred Heart Cathedral.

While the Easter celebrations will start in the Roman Catholic churches around 11.30 p.m. with the renewal of baptismal promises, Easter service will commence in the early hours of Sunday.

Nagercoil

Special prayers and services were held in all the churches across Kanniyakumari district in the afternoon to mark Good Friday, observed to commemorate the passion and crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

The worshippers took part in the special services that went on for hours in many churches. The ‘way of the cross’ procession, marking the journey of Christ to Mount Calvary for his crucifixion, was conducted in churches in the evening after the prayers.

Hundreds of people in all age groups took part in the ‘way of the cross’ rituals organised by the St. Anthonyar Church in Karungal town in the district.

Elaborate arrangements

The district police had made elaborate arrangements for the processions.

Special prayers were held in all churches including St Xavier’s Church at Kottar and Home Church in Vetoornimadam in Nagercoil.
