In a daring attempt, a gang, which attempted to sell a property valued at a whopping Rs 93 crore situated on the Netaji Road here, was arrested on Saturday.
Following a complaint from the Saptur zameen’s legal heir Ramasami Kamaya Naicker, the Superintendent of Police Asra Garg directed the District Crime Branch police to register a case.
According to the complainant, the property measuring 53 cents had buildings constructed over it. From time immemorial, the legal heirs of the zameen were not only enjoying the benefits of property, but were also paying property tax and other mandatory charges to the local body authorities including the electricity bills periodically.
Under such circumstances, an accused identified as Alagarsami, son of Muthu Reddy of Bhuvaneswari Koil Street, S.S. Colony had allegedly connived with his accomplices in Pollachi taluk, whose names were given as M. Jayaraman of Sooleswaranpatti, his wife Sarada, Thangam wife of Kumarasami of Devangarpuram Pollachi, Vijaykumar son of Krishnan Nair and Ravi of LIC Colony Pollachi and attempted to sell the property belonging to the zameen.
In a bid to give an impression that the property was ‘sold’ by the zameen’s legal heirs several years back, the gang had fabricated documents in such a ‘professional’ manner that it had managed to obtain “papers” issued by the then officials in Madurai district Collectorate, from the sub-registrar’s offices and from the Municipality, now Madurai Corporation.
The police officers, investigating the crime, were baffled as the gang had nothing but all forged documents, which appeared as if they were genuine and original, a police officer said. The modus operandi used by the gang was that they created a ‘dhana’ settlement of the 53 cent property in the name of Sarada and Jayaraman and subsequently registered documents in several dates with general power in the name of other accomplices. The property was also ‘sold’ to a person in Tiruchi and a sale agreement to this effect was recovered.
Based on the confessions, the accused Jayaraman, Sarada, Vijaykumar, Ravi, Thangam and Kanagaraj were arrested, while a hunt was on to secure some others involved in the offence. The persons, who had signed as witnesses to the transactions in the sale deed and other documents have also been interrogated.
