A woman was attacked by a four-member gang at Marani near Oomachikulam here on Saturday. They took away about 20 sovereigns of jewels and Rs. 5,000 in cash.

Shanmuga Veerapandian, an ex-serviceman, was working as a security guard in an oil company. He lived in Marani with his wife Usharani. On Friday, four youths had come to their house on the pretext of linking Aadhar card with ration card. When Veerapandian said that he had already got his Aadhaar card linked at a special camp, one of the youths insisted that they had come for door-to-door verification of the same. Later the youths said they would return the following day after checking records in the taluk office.

After Veerapandian left the house, the gang went to the house again and asked Usha Rani for the Aadhar card. Suddenly she was attacked by two youths, while the two others threatened to kill her four-year-old grandchild, if she raised alarm. The panicked woman parted with her valuables.

A senior police officer, who visited the scene of crime, said that they were hopeful of nabbing the gang as they had a vital clue.
