Foot-and-mouth disease: Ban on cattle fairs in Dindigul

The district administration has imposed a total ban on organising cattle fairs in the district for two months in order to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease.

In a release here on Friday, Collector N Venkatachalam said no one should organise cattle fairs even at union headquarter levels or in any public places within the district. The weekly cattle fair at Oddanchatram too should not be conducted for two months, he cautioned.

If the owners found any symptoms of the disease in their cattle, they should inform the nearest veterinary clinic or hospital and treat the cattle immediately.

Bleaching powder should be sprayed around the cattle shed. Stern action would be initiated against those violating the ban, the Collector warned. Hundreds of cattle heads were affected by the foot-and- mouth disease in Erode, Tiruchi, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts. Erode district administration had already imposed a similar ban on the conduct of cattle fairs.
