The flag hoisting ceremony for the 12-day teppam festival (float festival) of Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple took place on the temple premises on Thursday.

Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar were dressed in resplendent silk for the flag hoisting ceremony. On January 21, the deities would proceed from Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple to Mariamman Teppakulam for the float festival. The deities would leave the temple on a procession at 5.30 a.m. through Chithirai streets, East Masi Street, Yanaikkal, Nelpettai and Kamarajar Salai to Muktheeswarar Temple near Teppakulam.

The floatwill be taken through the temple tank twice in the morning and once in the evening. The temple authorities at the Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple said steps had been taken to ensure that there was enough water in the tank during the festival. They had pumped water from the Vaigai and had begun a bio-phy remediation process to clean the water.
