The first nomination for the general election for Madurai Corporation was received on Friday.

M. Aisu Hariram filed his paper as an independent for the post of councillor of ward 32, Vandiyoor. This was the only paper received till the end of the second day for filing nominations.

Nominations will be received till September 29, including Saturday. Candidates wishing to contest for the post of Mayor should file their papers with the Corporation Commissioner, while those contesting for the post of councillors should submit their nominations with the Assistant Returning Officer of their respective ward.

Corporation Commissioner S. Natarajan said that 700 names that were found ‘missing' while preparing the draft voter list had been identified and included. The process of printing electoral roll with photograph was at the final stage, he said.

Though the State Election Commission had earlier announced that Form 6 seeking inclusion of names could be submitted till the last date for filing of nominations, the Election Commission of India had set the last date for submission of Forms as September 19, Mr. Natarajan said.

A total of 3,031 applications seeking inclusion of names in four out of six Assembly constituencies within the Corporation limits had been received till the set deadline, the Commissioner said. He added that the model code of conduct had come into force since Thursday.

Meanwhile, the engineers from Bharat Electronics Limited began checking of electronic voting machines (EVM) that would be used during the October-17 polling.

The officials have finalised three venues for the counting of votes. The EVMs from 1,200 polling stations will be moved to the three counting centres at Madurai Medical College, American College and Tamil Nadu Polytechnic College.
