Farmers thank govt.

Members of the 18th Channel Farmer’s Association have thanked Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O.Panneerselvam for announcing ₹ 51 crore for repair and upkeep of channels in Theni district.

The announcement was made by the CM under Rule No. 110 in the Assembly recently.

“The 18th channel is a 60 km-long channel that carried surplus water from Mullaiperiyar to the rainshadow region extending from Lower Camp to Bodi.

The initial stretch of 1.5 kilometres from Lower Camp often becomes shallow as the lose soil slides inside the channel so that we had been requesting the government to construct a cut-and-cover cement channel for the stretch.

Paying heed to our request, the CM has earmarked ₹ 21 crores for the project,” said A. Thirupathivasagan, the secretary of the association.

“The purpose of the 18th channel scheme was to recharge groundwater in the raised plateau-like region abutting the Western Ghats. In the past 10 years, surplus water was released seven times in the channel, filling over 50 PWD water bodies, benefiting over 2,00,000 people and 40,000 acres of farm lands in three municipalities, eight town panchayats and 30 village panchayats,” he said.

“The CM has announced ₹ 20 crores for the repair of PT Rajan Channel, ₹ 5 crores each for repairing supply channel to Kesavapuram kanmoi and for reconstruction of Anai Pillayar dam in Bodi. On behalf of farmers of Theni district, we thank the government for the announcements,” he added.
