The district police have honoured families of three policemen who had laid down their lives while in service and while attempting to bring to book offenders and anti-social elements in three different incidents in the district on the occasion of ‘police commemoration day.’

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Ramanathapuram range) N. Kamini honoured the family members after police officials paid homage to 414 policemen, women and officers who had laid down their lives this year at the Martyr’s column at the Armed Reserve Police grounds here on Sunday.

N. Richard was serving as Sub Inspector of Police, Mudukulathur police station in September, 1978 when he received complaints that one N. Pandi Thevar, an ex-serviceman, was creating terror in the area. On the fateful day of September 13, 1978 he went to his house and arrested him. As he was taking him out, the accused pulled out a pistol and shot Richard dead on the spot. The accused was awarded life sentence in the case.

In Paramakudi, head constable Ganapathy of Taluk police station was going on his two-wheeler on June 11, 1994 when he found a lorry speeding fast after knocking down a woman. He chased and stopped the lorry but the driver, instead of getting down, ran over him. The head constable later succumbed to injuries at the Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai. Police registered a case and the trial is still pending in a court.

In another case, R. Subramanian, Sub Inspector of Police attached to Abiramam police station, was on routine patrolling on April 28, 2006 when he found Madurai-based Sappani alias Murugesan and his accomplices were consuming liquor on roadside and creating ruckus at Nandiseri. When he tried to arrest them, the accused hacked him to death. Trial in the case was still pending before a court, police said.

In Sivaganga, SP T. Jayachandran honoured Thavasipal, father of Alwin Sudhan, Sub Inspector of Police, attached to Thirupachethi police station, who was hacked to death by an armed gang, which was proceeding in a van to pay homage to Marudu Brothers in October, 2012.

A police team also visited the family members at his native village at Kailasapuram in Tirunelveli district and offered condolences. The SP also honoured Selvi, wife of P. Ilayaraja, a Sepoy from Kandanai, who was killed in an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir in August, 2017.
