Fake tablets seized, three held

Three persons were arrested and jailed on charges of possessing and selling fake tablets in the name of a leading pharmaceutical company in some pockets of the city.

According to a press release issued on Sunday, following a complaint from Manjunath, a representative of a registered pharmaceutical company, the City Police Commissioner Sanjay Mathur directed the police to register a case. The complaint stated that some persons were selling fake tablets in Jaihindpuram and under the guise of a consumer the complainant had also purchased them from a shop. The company had engaged the services of some trained professionals, who also collected information about the circulation of the tablets.

A special police team gathered inputs from different sources for the last three days, which led to the arrest of two persons, identified as Tamaraiselvan (43), son of Jayapal of Lakshmi Street, New Ramnad Road, Anupanadi, and his accomplice Anand (23), son of Subramani of Sivakami Street, Anupanadi.

Based on their confessions, the team raided a portion of a dwelling unit in Mariselvam compound in Bharathiar Street, Jaihindpuram and seized around 10,000 tablets stored in the room in cartons. The house owner, Mariselvam (42) son of Rasu Thevar of Solai Alagupuram, 3 street, was also arrested.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused were engaged in the illegal trade for at least six to 12 months. “They were reportedly procuring from an agent who supplied in bulk on a monthly basis. We are in the process of securing the agent, which may unravel more details,” senior police officer said. Cases under IPC Sections 417, 420, 468, 471 and among others were registered against the three accused.
