Officials of Madurai Corporation disconnected optic fibre cables (OFC) belonging to Tata Communications near Mattuthavani for non-payment of dues.
Many private telecommunication companies which had laid underground and OFC cables nearly 10 years ago had accumulated large dues as they had been erring on payment of annual rent to Madurai Corporation.
An official said that while the cables were installed with the permission of corporation and the installation costs had been paid, the companies had not paid the rent due to the civic body. Corporation Commissioner C. Kathiravan had earlier warned the telecommunication companies about the accumulated dues and gave them a week’s time following which strict action was announced.
As Tata Communication owed Rs 1.20 crore to the corporation, its cables were cut off. Assistant Commissioner R. Gunalan supervised the operation.
Other erring companies too will have their cables cut off in the next few days as they have not responded or paid their dues despite notices.
