February 25, 2014 12:05 pm | Updated May 18, 2016 10:54 am IST - MADURAI:

The Madras High Court Bench here on Monday directed the Madurai Collector, Corporation Commissioner and Dean of Government Rajaji Hospital to ensure uninterrupted water supply to all 16 operation theatres in the hospital.

A Division Bench comprising Justice R. Sudhakar and Justice V.M. Velumani passed the order while disposing of a public interest litigation (PIL) petition filed by S. Mohamed Yunus Raja, a law clerk from Gomathipuram here.

Consider suggestions

The judges also directed the officials to consider the petitioner’s suggestions to establish a 15-lakh-litre water tank on the hospital premises besides repairing the dysfunctional rainwater harvesting pipelines on the hospital campus and re-laying other damaged water pipelines.

In his affidavit, the petitioner said that the patients as well as their attendants in the hospital were forced to purchase water from shops as drinking water was not available in a majority of the wards.

He also cited newspaper reports of surgeries being postponed in the hospital due to water scarcity.
