Enhance consolidated pay of Corporation workers: HC

Directs payment of ₹16,725 per month for them

MADURAI

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Wednesday directed Madurai Corporation to enhance consolidated pay of workers classified under ‘consolidated pay workers’ in accordance with a Supreme Court direction.

A Division Bench of Justices K.K. Sasidharan and G.R. Swaminathan directed the Corporation to enhance the consolidated pay of the workers to ₹16,725 per month in accordance with ‘equal pay for equal work’ principle, and stated that it should be paid from December 2018.

Taking into account the 26 sweepers engaged on the High Court Bench campus, the court directed maintenance of a register by a supervisor so that they would not have to go all the way to the Corporation office to report for duty and come to the court campus every day.

The court observed that the consolidated pay for the employees of Madurai Corporation was low and it appeared that the Corporation had no concern to the orders issued by the government to revise the wages of temporary employees engaged by local bodies.

“When Madurai Corporation has started initiatives under the Smart City project, the workers should be paid reasonable wages. The Smart City project should be evolved for the all-round development of not only the city but also its people, including the working class”, the court said.

Under the Directive Principles of State Policy, Article 43 mandated that the State should endeavour to ensure a decent standard of living for workers. However, the workers had accepted the meagre wage pay without protest. When other Corporations had revised the pay, Madurai Corporation should have revised the consolidated pay, the court said.
