Engineering student killed in accident

An engineering college student, S. Dinesh Mani (19) of Subramaniapuram, was killed in a road accident on the Ring Road near Perungudi on Friday morning.

Police said the youth, who was studying II year mechanical engineering, was proceeding to his college in Kariapatti on a motorcycle. The youth lost control of the vehicle and hit a roadside boulder. He died on the spot.

Injured

In another accident, Aruppukottai Union Chairman Yoga. Vasudevan and two women councillors of Aruppukottai municipality Prema and Manjula were injured in a road accident near Kottampatti on Friday.

Police said the SUV in which they were travelling swerved away from the Madurai-Tiruchi four-lane highway around 10 a.m.

They were proceeding to Srirangam for campaigning for the AIADMK in the by-election.

Cash, jewels missing

Unidentified persons broke into a locked house and decamped with 21 sovereigns of gold and Rs. 10,000 cash at Jyothi Nagar in Melur.

Police said that A. Ayyanampillai (65) had left for his daughter’s house in Bangalore on Wednesday evening.

On Thursday afternoon, one of his neighbours found the door open and alerted him. On his return, he found that the valuables missing. The Melur police are investigating.
