Elephants damage banana crop

Wild elephants which entered into farms at Kalkulam and Nelvalam areas along Mettukkal Road leading to Adavinainar dam destroyed over 300 banana plants on Saturday night. They also damaged solar-powered fencing in the farms.

Elephants have been entering farms along the Western Ghats between Kadayanallur and Mekkarai over the past one year, and damaging banana crop, and coconut and mango trees. They have also been damaging water pipelines in the farms.

Farmers have been demanding action by Forest department to prevent elephants from entering farms, and ensure safety to lives and property.
