A herd of wild elephants, which had been camping along Kodaikanal-Palani Road for the last two days, created panic among villagers and vehicle users.

However, forest officials along with local villagers managed to chase away the elephants into the deep forest on Friday.

The presence of the wild jumbos created panic among the residents of Pethuparai and Vellaiparai areas. “We had cautioned the villagers to be careful and watch out for the wild animals,” Divisional Revenue Officer (Kodaikanal) A. Mohan said. “The herd, however, did not cause any damage to the villagers or their crops,” he added.
