A total of eight nominations were rejected during scrutiny of nomination papers of 36 candidates for Madurai Parliamentary constituency by Returning Officer and Collector S. Natarajan here on Wednesday. Papers were rejected for reasons like incomplete documents, lack of endorsement and non-payment of deposit.
Papers of four dummy candidates of AIADMK, DMK, CPI (Marxist) and Naam Tamilar Katchi were also rejected.
Papers of transgender activist Bharathi Kannamma, who filed her nomination papers on March 22, were rejected as she did not submit necessary documents. Papers of an independent candidate, Velavendhan, were rejected as he did not make his deposit.
Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam’s K. David Annadurai objected to the papers of the AIADMK candidate V.V.R. Raj Sathyan, son of former Mayor and sitting MLA of Madurai North V.V. Rajan Chellapa on the ground that the forms were incomplete. But the Returning Officer dismissed the objection.
Sivaganga
In Sivaganga, Returning Officer and Collector J. Jayakanthan scrutinised the nomination papers and accepted papers filed by 28 candidates. They included papers filed by AMMK nominee ‘Therbogi’ V Pandi. Twelve nominations, all additional papers filed by candidates, were rejected.
In Ramanathapuram, RO and Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao scrutinised papers and accepted 27 nominations while rejecting nine papers. The accepted nominations included papers filed by BJP nominee Nainar Nagendran, IUML candidate K Navas Kani, AMMK candidate Va Thu Na Anand and MNM candidate J Vijaya Baskar.
In the by-election to Manamadurai Assembly constituency, Thiruvasagam, Revenue Divisional Officer who is also the RO, scrutinised and accepted 14 papers including papers filed by disqualified MLA S. Mariappan Kennedy, DMK candidate ‘Karu’ Kasilingam alias Ilakkiyadasan and AIADMK candidate S Natarajan. The RO rejected four papers, including one filed by MNM candidate Radhakrishnan.
In the by-election to Paramakudi Assembly constituency, RDO and RO Ramesh scrutinised the papers and accepted 16 papers while rejecting one paper. The accepted papers included those filed by disqualified MLA S. Muthiah, DMK nominee Sampath Kumar, AIADMK candidate Sadan Prabakar and MNM nominee Sankar.
Tirunelveli
Twenty-two out of 49 nominations filed for the Tirunelveli Lok Sabha constituency were rejected on Wednesday by Returning Officer and Collector Shilpa Prabhakar Satish. In Tenkasi (reserved) constituency, 10 out of 36 nominations were rejected. In Kanniyakumari, 14 of 30 nominations filed by 24 candidates were rejected.
Thoothukudi
Out of a total of 62 nominations for Thoothukudi Lok Sabha constituency, 51 were accepted and 10 were rejected, said Collector and Returning Officer Sandeep Nanduri.
The DMK objected to the candidature of Tamilisai Soundararajan, BJP State president, saying that she was holding an office of profit as independent Director of Bharat Petroleum Corporation. The BJP provided documents to prove that she had resigned from the position. The nominations of M. Bhuvaneswaran of the AMMK who filed as an independent, T.P.S Pon Kumaran of the MNM, Christantine Rajasekar of the Naam Tamilar Katchi, film director V. Gowthaman were accepted. The nomination of an independent candidate, Dinakaran, was kept pending.
Theni
Returning Officer M Pallavi Baldev accepted 33 nominations for Theni Lok Sabha Constituency and rejected 11 here on Wednesday.
AMMK candidate Thanga Tamil Selvan objected to the papers filed by the AIADMK candidate O. P. Raveendranath.
“The AIADMK candidate had suppressed some information about his immovable assets in the affidavit, he said and demanded the nomination be rejected.”
The Arapor Iyakkam in a statement to the Returning Officer pleaded for rejection of Mr. Raveendranath Kumar’s nomination.
Officials declared that papers of key contenders including Mr. Raveendranath (AIADMK), EVKS Elangovan (Congress) and Mr. Thanga Tamil Selvan (AMMK) were correct. In Periakulam Assembly constituency, officials accepted 14 and rejected three papers. In Andipatti Assembly constituency, they accepted 18 and rejected eight papers.
Returning Officer for Dindigul LS constituency T.G. Vinay accepted 26 papers and rejected two papers. Papers of key candidates P. Velusamy (DMK) and K. Jothi Muthu (PMK) have been accepted.
For Nilakottai Assembly constituency, officials accepted 20 papers, rejected 20 papers while one nomination was kept pending.
Virudhunagar
Nominations of 10 out of 39 candidates were rejected by Retuning Officer of Virudhunagar Lok Sabha constituency A. Sivagnanam.
Among the candidates whose papers were accepted are former MP, B. Manickam Tagore of the Congress, S. Alagarsamy of the DMDK, S. Paramasiva Iyyappan of AMMK, K. Arulmozhithevan of Naam Tamilar, M. Perumalsamy of BSP, V. Muniyasamy of MNM and M. Packiayaraj of Makkal Ilagnar Katchi. A. Kavitha of Ahila Indiya Thayaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam is the only woman candidate left in the contest. For the by-election to Sattur Assembly constituency, all nominations, except three dummy candidates, were accepted. Returning Officer A. Kalimuthu (Revenue Divisional Officer, Sattur) accepted nominations of 31 candidates. Prominent among them are disqualified AIADMK MLA of Sattur, S.G. Subramanian of the AMMK, V. Srinivasan of the DMK, M.S.R. Rajavarman of the AIADMK, P. Sureshkumar of Naam Tamilar Katchi, N. Sundararaj of MNM and S. Subbaraj of Anti-Corruption Dynamic Party.
