A routine drunken brawl between two brothers late on Sunday night ended up fatally for them.

Police identified the deceased as A. Chellasamy (53) and A. Venkatachalam (55), a former police head constable. Venkatachalam was dismissed from service some 12 years ago, the police said.

The incident happened in the presence of the parents and family members in front of their house at S. Kannapatti around 11.30 p.m. “They did not take their fight seriously as it was a routine affair between them whenever they were under the influence of liquor,” said V. Gomathi, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Peraiyur). After a heated argument, the brothers started exchanging blows. Both fell on the ground and started rolling over each other.

In a fit of rage, they banged the head of each other on a stone pillar lying on the ground. While Chellasamy died on the spot, the other, was declared brought dead by doctors in a hospital.
