DMK president M.K. Stalin on Wednesday said that the DMK had been fighting for the rights of employees and labourers.
Addressing a gathering following a rally taken out here on the occasion of May Day, he said that while former Chief Minister Anna had declared May Day a government holiday, his successor Karunanidhi made sure wages were given to employees on May 1. “He fought with [then Prime Minister] V.P. Singh to get the benefit for Central government employees as well,” he said.
Mr. Stalin said that Karunanidhi took interest in how the May Day Park in Chintadripet in Chennai took shape. “He took keen interest in the project and visited it several times, and the park was named May Day Park,” he said. The BJP and the AIADMK were acting against the interests of the employees. “When farmers protested in New Delhi, let alone assuring them that their demands would be fulfilled, Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not even meet them and tell them that their demands would be considered. The present rulers out interests of a few corporate houses ahead of the workforce,” he said
The May Day procession was taken out held from Toovipuram to Chidambara Nagar bus stop, in which MP Kanimozhi, MLAs Anitha R. Radhakrishnan, Geetha Jeevan, K.N. Nehru, Poongothai Aladi Aruna and other leaders were present. Mr. Stalin paid floral tributes to a May Day memorial pillar.
