Directive on issuing post-mortem certificates

The Madras High Court Bench here on Monday directed the Health Secretary to consider a representation made by an advocate here to make sure that government hospitals across the State forward post-mortem certificates to the jurisdictional police as well as relatives of the deceased within two days from the day on which they conduct autopsy.

A Division Bench of Justices R. Sudhakar and V.M. Velumani passed the order while disposing of a public interest litigation petition filed by the lawyer, N. Saravanan of Y. Othakadai here.

The petitioner had contended that delay in issuing post-mortem certificates and failure to follow the prescribed autopsy rules would hamper police investigation in criminal cases.
