Following repeated complaints of foul smell emanating from the manure production centre in Anna Nagar, Mayor J. Ilamathi made a surprise inspection at the Corporation Anna Manure Production Centre on Monday.

Around 1 tonne of biodegradable waste collected from four wards–15, 16, 17 and 31–of Dindigul Corporation is being processed at the centre, the Mayor said. The stench arises only while the vegetable waste is processed during morning hours, which is bearable, she remarked. The yard premises was kept clean, the Mayor said during her inspection.

These manure was being supplied free of cost to the public and farmers until now. The Mayor said action would be taken to reduce the stench further after discussing the issue with officials.

The issue was raised by BJP Councillor G. Danapal during the first meeting of the Dindigul Corporation Council held on March 28.

The City Health Inspector Lavanya, supervisor Manoj Kumar and others were present.

The inspection took place after Ms. Ilamathi inaugurated road project worth ₹1.85 crore, which was sanctioned for the construction of two-lane road on GTN Road in ward 17 under the capital subsidy scheme.

Deputy Mayor S Rajappa, Assistant Engineer Navaneetha Krishnan, and councillors were present.
