Dalit youth, parolee hacked to death by armed gangs

Two separate incidents reported under Samayanallur police sub-division

In two daring incidents, armed gangs hacked to death a Dalit youth and a murder accused in different locations under Samayanallur police sub-division since Tuesday evening.

In the incident reported on Wednesday, 29-year-old M. Niruban Chakravarthy was brutally murdered after an armed gang forced its way into his house at Ambedkar Colony near Daffedar Santhai around 2 a.m.

The Dalit youth, who was into making construction material, was fast asleep with his family members, including three children, when the gang attacked him with sharp-edged weapons. Chakravarthy died on the spot and the gang members fled the scene.

Investigating officers said the victim had simmering differences with members of another caste group. Cases were registered against him and his rivals by Samayanallur police in 2015. Besides, there were also skirmishes during a temple festival.

In the other incident, 23-year-old R. Sivamoorthy, a murder accused, was hacked to death at a coconut farm in Kodimangalam under Nagamalai Pudukottai police station limits on Tuesday night.

Police said the victim, hailing from Nallankulam in Sivaganga district, was an accused in the murder of Arunpandi of Michelpattinam. He had been signing the register at Sholavandan police station as part of his bail condition from May 30 till June 23.

After Arunpandi’s murder, he shifted to Kodimangalam where his uncle Periyakaruppan had a farm. An armed gang, which arrived on three motorbikes, attacked Sivamoorthy with lethal weapons and escaped around 5.30 p.m.

The youth suffered multiple cut injuries on his head and hand and was rushed to Government Rajaji Hospital, where he succumbed to injuries.

Suspecting it to be a case of murder for revenge, police said Sivamoorthy could have been killed in retaliation for Arunpandi’s slaying by his relatives.
