After a 10-month lull, the Madurai Kamaraj University is at last getting into thick of action. Crucial academic and administration meetings are set to take place in March and the dates have been finalised by university authorities in consultation with senior officials of State Government.

As per the schedule, the much awaited Syndicate meeting which has to take a call on deciding a nominee for the Vice-Chancellor Search Committee will be held at Chennai on February 15. The varsity also got clearance to hold Academic Council meeting on March 20 and Senate meeting on March 29.

Official sources told The Hindu on Wednesday that the university is gearing up to hold the annual convocation which could not take place due to the delay in appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor.

Tentatively, the convocation date is fixed for March 28 and green signal awaited from the office of Governor/Chancellor.

“The dates for Academic Council and Senate have been finalised after our meeting with the Higher Education Secretary last week. We have also written to the Governor suggesting a date — March 28 — for annual convocation. Once it is cleared by the Chancellor, we will go ahead with convocation ceremony arrangements,” a senior MKU official has said.

For the Syndicate meeting to be held in Chennai on February 15, the agenda is being prepared right now to clear pending issues. Finalising the university budget for coming year is top on priority since disbursal of staff salaries and other expenditure have to be met in time. It is expected that the Syndicate members will finally decide on the nominee for VC Search Panel.

Only after the Syndicate nominee is decided, the three-member Search Panel can be constituted through gazette notification. “We are hoping that Vice-Chancellor will be appointed before the convocation. There are indications from the Government side,” an official said.

The university is functioning without a Vice-Chancellor since April 20 this year ever since R. Karpaga Kumaravel demitted office.
