Cracker sales have significantly dropped compared to the last few years owing to restrictions imposed by Supreme Court and fear of punishment, say wholesale and retail dealers. They fear a loss of at least 30%.
“Though buying capacity has increased, people are apprehensive about purchasing crackers because they do not want to flout rules. Besides, there is this time. People who used to buy crackers for ₹5,000 have reduced their budget to ₹1,000,” said S. Tamilselvan, a dealer selling crackers for over 30 years in Sellur.
He said that had the time restriction been announced at least two months ago, the dealers would not have purchased crackers in bulk.
“We have no choice but to return it to the manufacturers in Sivakasi as we only have temporary licences. However, unfortunately, most of the stock are not returnable,” he said.
K. Rammohan, a licensed shop owner on West Veli Street, said people prefer buying crackers that create a striking display.
“Many youth these days are more attracted to the colours than the noise from bombs. The 100walas are also purchased but the interest in them has come down,” he says.
Due to time restrictions, V. Pandiammal, a customer, says her children will only be able to burst a limited number of crackers. She says she will spend Deepavali watching television, distributing sweets and spending time with family this year. “Most money budgeted for buying crackers went towards purchasing garments instead,” she says.
S, Senthil Pandian, a manager of a direct factory outlet, says sales on Monday was higher than other days, thanks to as last minute purchase. Maybe there will be a shift towards green crackers next year, owing to the court restrictions, he says.
