Former Madurai urban district unit secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist), R. Jothiram, passed away here on Sunday.

He was 61. He is survived by his wife, Kanagamani and two sons and a daughter. Mr. Jothiram, who was being treated for heart-ailment for the last two months, breathed his last at a private hospital here.

He had joined the Centre of Indian Trade Unions after completing his pre-university college education. He rose to become the party district secretary in 2000 and also became the party State committee member. He was fielded as the party candidate to contest in the election to the post of Mayor of Madurai Corporation.

His funeral will be held at Thathaneri on Monday.
