Prime Minister Narendra Modi showing partiality against the interests of the people of Tamil Nadu: P. Kalidoss

The delay in not forming the Cauvery Management Board as per the Supreme Court order revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was showing partiality against the interests of the people of Tamil Nadu, said Communist Party of India (Madurai rural) district secretary, P. Kalidoss.

Addressing protesters who assembled for a rail roko at Tirumangalam Railway station here on Wednesday, he said that the Centre has betrayed the people of Tamil Nadu by failing to form the CMB with an ulterior motive of winning the Assembly elections in Karnataka.

The Centre had shown lackadaisical attitude in implementing the Supreme Court order on the issue. “It has thus violated the Constitution of the India and was against the sovereignty of the country,” he charged.

48 cadres arrested

Though the party cadre were arrested when they attempted rail roko at Tirumangalam, another group, led by party farmers wing district secretary, A.M. Jayakodi, blocked the Chennai-bound Guruvayur Express at Sholavandan. Forty eight cadre were arrested there.

Meanwhile, 27 cadre of the party urban district unit were arrested when they tried to stage a rail roko at Madurai railway junction. The protesters, led by the party district secretary, M. Saravanan, were prevented in front of the railway station.

Mr. Saravanan said that Cauvery was the lifeline of not only farmers of the delta region but also for several districts that depended on it for its drinking water needs.

“If CMB was not formed and Cauvery water is not ensured for Tamil Nadu, the delta region would turn a desert and it would only induce suicides by farmers like the ryots of Maharastra,” he warned. He wanted the Centre to heed to the popular demand of the people of Tamil Nadu and form the CMB at the earliest.
