A couple were arrested for allegedly stealing money from a youth on a bus proceeding from Nagercoil to Madurai on Sunday evening.
Police said Senthil Kumar (42) of K.K. Nagar in Madurai, who is working as the cashier of a wholesale cloth shop there, had gone to Nagercoil to collect money from the retail traders there. After collecting ₹ 1.42 lakh, he was returning to Madurai on the bus.
As the bag containing the cash accidentally fell down even as Mr. Senthil had a nap, Paulpandi (32) of Gandhi Nagar in Kappalur near Tirumangalam and his wife Muthumari (25), who were sitting behind him, took the bag. On noticing the hefty cash kept in the bag, Muthumari took the money and kept it inside her blouse.
As the bus entered Vaeinthaankulam new bus stand, Mr. Senthil realised that his bag with the cash was missing. When he saw the bag lying on the floor of the bus without money, Mr. Senthil started frantically searching for the missing cash.
On seeing Muthumari sleeping in a suspicious manner behind his seat with her whole body covered with a blanket, he alerted the police on duty at the bus stand.
When the police searched Paulpandi and Muthumari, they recovered the cash from the woman and arrested the couple.
