At a specially convened meeting of the corporation council here on Monday, the resignation letter of Mayor V. V. Rajan Chellappa was tabled by the Deputy Mayor K. Thiraviam. Following the move to contest in the TN Assembly election, Mr. Chellappa had submitted his resignation on April 9 prior to filing his nomination to the Assembly seat. Announcing this, in the presence of Corporation Commissioner Sandeep Nanduri, the deputy mayor adjourned the meeting.

While a majority of councillors from the AIADMK were present, the DMK members were absent. With the quorum in place, the resignation was accepted, officials said.
