The idea of reaching out to people’s doorsteps had not only worked well but also received good response from the public, said Corporation Commissioner S. Aneesh Sekhar here on Thursday.

During the weekly grievance meetings, when a large number of people turned up seeking birth/death certificates and regarding other issues, the officials directed the petitions to the wards concerned. However, there was delay and public repeatedly turned up at the grievance meetings.

Hence, it was decided to organise special camps every week taking the officers and invite public and issue what they wanted on the spot, Dr. Aneesh Sekhar said, adding the advance announcement of such special camps helped the people attend them without fail.

On Thursday, the special camp held at Sammattipuram ward office drew 68 petitions from wards 21 and 22, covering Kochadai, Bethaniapuram and other areas. The petitions sought various civic amenities, including drinking water and underground drainage connections. Those petitioners, who remitted the prescribed fee at the camp, were given the certificates.

Lakshmi, a resident of Bethaniapuram, said for at least over nine months she was waiting to get an order for drinking water connection. Petitions submitted in the past did not elicit any response. “When officials came to Sammattipuram, I got it done within an hour. Thanks to the Corporation Commissioner,” she said.

The officials said 39 petitioners got benefited from the camp held between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Later, the Commissioner inspected the repair works under way at the Corporation Middle School in Prasanna Colony, Avaniapuram. He also interacted with the students about the toilet and drinking water facilities.
