Corporation school toppers receive ‘Amma awards’

Eight schools, based on academic performance, get Rs. 1 lakh each

Corporation school toppers in the classes 10 and 12 public examinations held this year were given special ‘Amma education awards’ at an event organised by the Madurai City Corporation, here on Monday to mark the completion of four years of the city corporation’s current tenure.

Students who had secured the first, second and third places from classes 10 and 12 among the corporation schools were given cash awards of Rs. 50,000, Rs. 30,000 and Rs. 20,000 respectively. Apart from the toppers, nearly 329 students from corporation who had secured centums in various subjects in the examinations were given cash prizes of Rs. 1,000 each.

Teachers and Headmistresses from schools which had secured 100 per cent pass percentage were also felicitated at the event. Eight schools which had been identified based on academic performance and infrastructural needs were given assistance of Rs. 1 lakh each, to carry out developmental works.

Velliveethiyar Corporation Girls Corporation School received a rolling trophy for their overall academic performance in the public examinations.

Speaking at the event, Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa said that the schools from the Madurai corporation had been faring consistently well in the public exams over the last few years. “Over the last four years, numerous schemes have been introduced for the benefit of the people and to improve the infrastructure of the city. This includes the new omni bus terminal at Mattuthavani, the Cauvery combined drinking water scheme for newly-added areas and additional vehicles provided for garbage clearance,” he said.

Mr Rajan Chellappa further said that the two causeways under construction over the Vaigai at a cost of Rs. 30 crore would greatly ease traffic as well as the proposed fruits commission market, which would help de-congest a few areas and provide space for vendors. Corporation Commissioner C. Kathiravan, ward councillors and other officials from the corporation were present at the event.
