Asserting that the Congress, a 134-year-old party, remained strong, Youth Congress national secretary Abraham Roy Mani exuded confidence that it would bounce back with more strength after a new party president assumed office.

Talking to reporters after addressing party workers on ‘Vizhuthugalai nokki’, a State-wide campaign to strengthen Youth Congress, here on Monday, Mr. Mani said Congress Working Committee (CWC) was seized of the leadership issue and ‘a right person would assume office at the right time’.

Rejecting suggestion that the party has become a ‘captainless ship’, he said the party had seen several trials and tribulations in the past but staged a comeback every time. This time also, it would bounce back and emerge stronger, he said, adding values and workers contributed to the strength of the party.

He said Rahul Gandhi had resigned as party president owning responsibility for the party’s defeat in the recent Lok Sabha elections, and the CWC was seized of the matter. It would decide whether to accept the resignation and, in the event, who should be the new party president.

“The Congress is very strong and there was nothing to worry. We will come back more strongly,” he added.

Replying to a question, he said no one was scarred of accepting party leadership. There was a process for electing the new party president, he added.

In Karnataka, some of the party MLAs, who switched loyalty on being bribed by the BJP, had been disqualified by the Assembly Speaker. They should be dealt with severely under anti-defection law and people should teach a fitting lesson to such opportunistic politicians in the elections, he said.
