TIRUCHI

The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court at Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district on Wednesday granted conditional bail to Deputy Superintendent of Police N. Jeevanandham who was arrested by the Idol Wing CID last month on charges of colluding with idol smugglers.

When the petition filed by the arrested DSP, Jeevanandham, came up for hearing in the court on Wednesday, he executed a bond for ₹1 lakh and produced two sureties. Granting him conditional bail, the court ordered him to appear before the Idol Wing CID office in Tiruchi at 10 a.m. every day and sign a register.

The Idol Wing CID had arrested Jeevanandham on the charges of shielding thieves and smugglers from facing trial and fabricating evidence before a court in a 2005 case relating to theft and smuggling of 13 idols from Sri Narumbunathar Temple at Palavoor in Tirunelveli district.

The DSP had been attached to the Prohibition and Enforcement Wing in Tiruchi district at the time of his arrest by the Idol Wing CID last month.

Of the 13 idols stolen from the temple, nine were recovered by the Idol Wing CID. The remaining four idols had been smuggled out of the country with the knowledge of officials, including Jeevanandham, who was with the Idol Wing as an Inspector at that time.
