Compensation paid to HIV patient in open court

June 17, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - MADURAI:

The State government on Tuesday disbursed a compensation of Rs. 1.5 lakh, as directed by the Madras High Court Bench here on June 9, to a HIV patient who was made to undergo imprisonment for about seven years in an unconnected case.

Dindigul Superintendent Police handed over a cheque to the victim in the presence of Justice S. Nagamuthu who had ordered a total compensation of Rs. 6 lakh after holding the State vicariously responsible for the “serious human rights violation.”

After recording the disbursal of the first instalment, the judge ordered that the rest of the money should be paid to the victim within two months.
