Collector U. Sagayam on Thursday assured to get loans from NABARD for about 100 ‘narikuravars' to purchase milch animals and also make arrangements to procure milk from them in bulk quantity by milk producers' union.
During a visit to Sakkimangalam, Illamanoor, Karupayoorani among other hamlets in the district, the Narikuravar community wanted help from the district administration. As a majority of them were familiar with rearing cattle and agreed to the concept of self-employment, it was proposed to get financial assistance from institutions such as NABARD under government schemes. The Collector assured to work out modalities and offer them a package.
The ‘kaatu nayakars' in the locality demanded issuance of community certificates with which alone they could get government benefits. Mr. Sagayam ordered the revenue authorities to get applications and issue certificates after due verification.
A couple of repair works were being undertaken at a cost of Rs 26,000 in the integrated women SHG complex in Karupayoorani. After interacting with the women members who were running tailoring shop with two sewing machines, he instructed the Mahalir Thittam Project Officer to provide four more additional sewing machines with which they could get more orders from people in the locality.
At Illamanoor village, Mr. Sagayam spoke with some of the school students and got a commitment from the children that they would come with flying colours in the ensuing public examinations. He offered to give the toppers fabulous prizes amidst cheers. He expressed satisfaction over the upkeep of the Adi-Dravida School campus and the hostel, which was surrounded by a range of plants and trees.
He wanted other educational institutions in the district also to follow the footsteps of the Illamanoor Adi-Dravida School.
Accompanied by the Madurai Corporation officials, the Collector inspected the sewage treatment plant at Sakkimangalam, built at a cost of Rs. 34.81 crore, a press release said.
