Collector M. Pallavai Baldev inspected kudimaramathu works of Melmangalam supply channel in Periyakulam taluk on Wednesday. The repair work for this channel has been taken up at a cost of ₹90 lakh.

“To combat drought-like condition in the State, the government has implemented kudimaramathu work to be taken up with the involvement of farmer organisations. Under this scheme, lakes, tanks, waterbodies of different grades, including ponds, will be desilted and strengthened and repair work taken up in check dams, sluices and shutters,” said the collector.

Under kudimaramathu scheme in Periyakulam taluk, the Melmangalam channel would be desilted for 5.8 km and concrete lining for 1,000 metres. This channel irrigates 298.79 hectares directly and 15.10 hectares indirectly.

“The repair work will ensure free flow of water, apart from reducing chances of breach in the bund in case of flood. The channel will also feed kanmois such as Naranankulam and Sirukulam,” added the Collector, who later discussed the scheme details with members of farmer associations.

On Tuesday, the Collector held a review meeting with various farmer organisations from across the district, elaborating on kudimaramathu schemes to be implemented with the participation of villagers and overseen by PWD officials. She sought the cooperation of ayacutdars and water user associations.
