Indian Overseas Bank (IOB), the lead bank in the district has launched ‘bank on wheel’, a mobile Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) to serve customers in rural areas.

Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao flagged off the mobile ATM in the presence of T. G. Viswanathan, Chief Regional Manager, IOB, Thoothukudi region, and K. S. Suresh Babu, lead bank manager on special deputation from Kovilpatti at a brief function here on Tuesday.

IOB was launching similar ‘bank on wheel’ services in 14 districts, in which it was functioning as lead bank. Customers of all banks could draw money from the mobile ATM, using ATM debit cards while IOB customers with barcode on their passbooks, could update their accounts using the printer facility, officials said.

The mobile ATM would carry maximum of ₹30 lakh a day and would traverse ‘unbanked centres’, where people have to travel to access banking services, they said. The vehicle would also stop at important locations for the convenience of customers of other banks, they added. Thanks to the Braille keypad, visually impaired people could also use the ATM, they said.

A guard, a custodian and a driver would be present in the mobile ATM van. In rural areas, the bank’s Business Correspondents would help the customers in drawing money and updating the passbooks, officials said.

Lead bank officer K. Marudhupandi, rural self employment training institute director R. Kalaiselvan, financial literacy credit counsellor Vaiyamuthu and IOB branch managers were present on the occasion.
