Vidhuthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol. Thirumavalavan appealed to the State government to keep Tasmac shops across the State closed on Tuesday respecting public sentiment.

Condemning the police attack at Kalingapatti in which Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko was injured, he asked why the police who stood as mute spectators in Dharmapuri when miscreants ransacked three villages for six hours did react violently in Kalingapatti when only one Tasmac shop was ransacked.

The police should withdraw the case foisted against Mr. Vaiko and others, he demanded. Seeking a judicial enquiry into the death of Gandhian Sasi Perumal in Kanyakumari district, he said the district administration should have closed the Tasmac shop in contention before the protest.

“The High Court had instructed the government to shift the shop but even that order was not implemented,” he said.

Vaiko says he was targeted

Meanwhile, Mr. Vaiko alleged that some of the tear gas shells fired at Kalingapatti on Sunday were aimed at him. Thanking the political and other outfits who had extended their support to Tuesday’s bandh called by the MDMK and the VCK, he said only shops and commercial establishments would be closed. Traffic would not be disturbed at all, he assured.
