‘Classes to resume from today’

Fisheries College and Research Institute Dean P. Velayutham on Wednesday said that classes would resume from Thursday onwards following talks with protesting students.

The Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Dr.J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University held talks with 23 students representing three colleges. Ahead of the talks, the suspension of 11 final-year students who raised their opposition against the move was cancelled.

The students, who have been protesting over the last three days, feared that the creation of a self-financing Bachelor of Fisheries Science course at Fisheries College and Research Institute at Mayiladi in Kanniyakumari district would take away jobs from students who were admitted under the merit quota.

Following an assurance that steps would be taken to consider doing away with the self-financing course, the students gave up the protest, the Dean said.
