Children’s science festival gets under way

Students from different regions of India participate

It was a confluence of young minds from 12 States for learning through experiments and sharing knowledge at All India Children’s Science Festival, which was inaugurated at Mannar Tirumalai Naicker College here on Friday.

The three-day event would see 200 students learning about home science, health science and heritage, said P. Rajamanickam, general secretary, All India People’s Science Network. “We aim to instil the habit of questioning in children to make them understand problems better. They will also work towards creating alternative scientific solutions to primary issues they face every day,” he said.

S. Chatterjee, president of the Network, said a healthy exchange of cultures would occur when students from the northern, eastern and the western parts of India mingled with those in the south. Since 100 students from Madurai played host to those from other regions, they learned something beyond science, he said.

“The participants will learn more about diversity and tolerance through this initiative. Science does not provide space for diversity but presents a practical understanding that everyone is equal,” he said.

G. Vasudevan, Executive Director, Fortune Pandian Hotel, who also took part in the event, said the students would have the opportunity to delve deeper in other cultures.
