Child marriage stopped

The Social Welfare Department stopped a child marriage at Tirupparankundram here in the early hours of Friday.

Based on a tipoff received by Collector L. Subramanian, District Social Welfare Officer R. Anandavalli and personnel from All Women’s Police Station visited a wedding hall in the area.

“We reached the spot and on confirming that the age of the girl was only 17stopped the marriage under Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.

A written undertaking was received from parents of the girl from Nilaiyur that she will not be married off until she became a major,” Ms. Anandavalli said.
