The Social Welfare Department stopped a child marriage at Tirupparankundram here in the early hours of Friday.
Based on a tipoff received by Collector L. Subramanian, District Social Welfare Officer R. Anandavalli and personnel from All Women’s Police Station visited a wedding hall in the area. “We reached the spot and on confirming that the age of the girl was only 17, stopped the marriage under Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006. A written undertaking was received from parents of the girl from Nilaiyur that she will not be married off until she became a major,” Ms. Anandavalli said.
A complaint was registered at the AWPS in Tirupparankundram.
