Members of the Builders’ Association of India, Madurai Centre, carried out a protest march from the Tamukkam Grounds to the Collectorate premises here on Tuesday condemning the hike in the price of cement.

Speaking about the protest, secretary of the association S. Rangaraj said that they were not offered any explanations for the sudden hike in price of a 50 kg cement bag from Rs 250 to around Rs 390 now.

“The public at large will be adversely affected by this hike as they will be forced to pay more for materials. The unprecedented hike in raw materials is also affecting us as there is already a slowdown in the economy,” he said.

The members submitted a petition at the Collectorate urging the government to regulate the prices of cement and asked that a fixed rate be announced which would help them. They were led by R. Subburaman, chairman of the association.
